Target audience: This course is suitable for those teachers who will be new to Early Years from September 2017. It will be for NQTs and any teachers who have been out of an Early Years classroom for an extended period of time.

Event dates: Tue 12th Sep 17 - Wed 18th Oct 17

Day 1: 12th September 2017 (full day), 9.15am-3.15pm

Day 2: 18th October 2017 (half day), 1pm-4pm

Teaching in the Early Years is a specialism; it is however based on the same essential elements of outstanding teaching and learning as every other year group. Through expert advice, practical ideas and collaboration with colleagues, this programme will ensure those new to Early Years (NQTs or more experienced staff teaching in Early Years for the first time) are confident in mastering this most rewarding specialism.

Throughout the programme, teachers will develop a solid understanding of the Early Years curriculum, characteristics of effective learning and pedagogy to support this. Through a holistic view of early years provision areas such as assessment for learning, differentiation, challenge, engagement, questioning and assessment will be explored. We will investigate the importance of the adult role and learning environment and how these two elements closely interrelate with the areas mentioned above.

In addition, each delegate will receive a half day in class support visit from one of the Education Central Teaching and Learning team. If required, additional visits can be arranged but these will incur an additional cost.

By the end of the course delegates will:

  • Know the fundamentals of the Early Years curriculum.
  • Have a range of strategies for self-assessment and self-chosen learning.
  • Know how a quality learning environment enhances and challenges children’s learning, aiding progress.
  • Have a deeper understanding of how children learn through play.
  • Develop questioning techniques to enhance adult interaction.
  • Deepen their understanding of the characteristics of effective learning and how this links to observational assessment.
  • Have a better understanding of the ‘holistic’ view to planning within the Early Years.
  • Have a deeper understanding of early Mathematical and Language development.
