The Drawing Masterclass is for pupils who are passionate about art, and about drawing in particular. This session will be led by an expert artist and drawing tutor. Pupils will have an opportunity to learn how to draw a portrait from life using a range of different techniques and artist's materials including graphite, charcoal, chalk and ink.
The focus will be on demonstrations and on teaching pupils how to draw directly from a life model (in costume) using the same techniques employed by some of the greatest artists in history, and inspired by works in the gallery's collection.
Pupils will learn how to sketch and prepare paper before going on a behind the scenes tour of arts works in store. They can start to work on their drawings just like real artists, at an easel.
Some comments made by pupils and teachers during their visit last year were:
"The children, after the introduction, just wanted to get on and draw!"
"A really great experience for children, it challenged them but they all really enjoyed it and learned new skills to take back with them."
"Step by step skills which children can take back to school."
"Having an artist there so children can see what it takes to make it as a profession."
"Enjoyed the different styles of art!"
"Loved the day, especially sketching a real life person!"
"My drawing is now better than before!"
"I have learnt how to draw a portrait properly."
All materials are provided. Pupils and staff will need to bring a packed lunch.
